Accompaniment is a mode, not a method. It is not a particular set of gifts. It is not memorizing a script. It is not a breadth of knowledge. It is simply the presence of love. It is a call to be fully yourself in the presence of another, because it is in your unbarred presence that you embody your image bearer so beautifully. And when someone sees an image of God, they cannot resist revealing themselves back in the safety of love.
What is the Mode?
The mode is about being “you”. You are his workmanship.
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." (Ephesians 2:8-10)
The word "workmanship" means "poema" in greek, which translates to "God's creative, redemptive artistry." It carries intentional and purposeful craftsmanship. God is writing a poem of each of our lives, set aside just for us.
How do I enter the Mode?
Being yourself feels like an unburdening not a “work harder”. It happens when we are seated in love. A way to know whether we're operating within ourselves is what psychologists call the 8 C's of IFS.
8 C's of IFS
- Calmness: A state of feeling centred and peaceful, even during stress.
- Curiosity: An open-minded interest in understanding one's inner world without judgment.
- Clarity: A clear, undistorted perception of situations and feelings.
- Compassion: Showing kindness and care for one's own feelings and inner parts, especially those that are suffering.
- Confidence: A belief in one's own worth and ability to lead from a core "Self" energy.
- Courage: The willingness to face fears and explore difficult emotions or situations.
- Creativity: The ability to find new ideas and flexible ways of problem-solving.
- Connectedness: A sense of being in relationship with one's inner parts, others, and the world.
RIM - Relationship Identity Mission
The "relationship, identity, mission" (RIM) framework helps us understand that our purpose (mission) flows from their understanding of who we are (identity), which in turn is built upon our core relationship with God.
