Core Posture
Lead With the Love of Jesus
- John 13:34-35 — Love as Christ loved.
- “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
- Matt. 11:29-30 — Gentleness & humility
- “Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my load is light.”
- Recall that the Kingdom comes through presence, not pressure
Freedom First
- Ask for voluntary consent
- No coercion, persuasion, or pressure
- Rev. 3:20 — Jesus honors freedom
- “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with me.”
Clarify Your Role
- “Christian partner in dialogue, exploring worldview with you.”
- Not counselor, pastor, advisor.
Listen More Than You Speak
- Ask questions in the manner of Jesus: kind, curious, courageous, compassionate, unforced.
- James 1:19 — “This you know, my beloved brethren. But let everyone be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.”
Keeping Healthy Boundaries
Monitor Emotional Safety
- Calm → proceed
- Mild distress → slow down
- Trauma/crisis → pause + refer (Gal. 6:2-6)
- “Bear one another’s burdens, and thus fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.”
Follow Their Curiosity
- Spiritually open → explore Jesus gently in the context of their worldview as you listen for it jointly, and yours.
- Uncertain → stay with worldview.
- Closed → maintain peace, express continued interest in the person, not the ‘project’.
Protect Boundaries
Watch for:
- Emotional dependency.
- Excessive contact.
- Private spaces.
- Romantic drift.
- Role confusion.
Re-establish immediately; do not wait in fear as such dynamics can spiral quickly into dissolution or confusion. Err on the side of ‘checking’ in rather than bowing to fears about disappointing your partner in dialogue.
Know When to Refer
- Mental health
- Trauma
- Addiction
- Crisis
- Spiritual emergencies: Read 1 Corinthians, Chapter 12 — Different gifts for different needs
Discern Fruitfulness
- Continue if trust + clarity are present
- Adjust if confusion is present
- End gracefully if unfruitful or unsafe
Accountability & Prayer: Remember, Jesus Himself Was Sustained Through Prayer!
Pascal: “God has instituted prayer so as to confer upon his creatures the dignity of being causes.”
- Debrief every meeting
- Pray for the person
- Pray for your own heart
- Mark 1:35 Jesus withdrew to pray
- Mark 1:35: “In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there.”
- Luke 5:15-16: “But the news about Him was spreading even farther, and large crowds were gathering to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray.”
- Matthew 14:23: “After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone.”
- Mark 6:46: “After bidding them farewell, He left for the mountain to pray.”
- Luke 6:12: “It was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God.”
- Luke 9:18: “And it happened that while He was praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, ‘Who do the people say that I am?’”
- Luke 9:28-29: “Some eight days after these sayings, He took along Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while He was praying, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming.”
- John 6:15: “So Jesus, perceiving that they were intending to come and take Him by force to make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone.”
- Luke 22:39-41: “And He came out and proceeded as was His custom to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him. When He arrived at the place, He said to them, ‘Pray that you may not enter into temptation.’ And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and began to pray.”
